Registration increases by 16 % at Université de Montréal

This fall, Université de Montréal welcomed 10,500 new students, a 16 % increase over last year. The registrar's figures as of September 10th show 1,704 more new students than last year. This increase in registration applies to all categories of students : 16 % at the undergraduate level, 17 % in continuing education, 17 % at the graduate level and 18 % at the post graduate level.

These figures were presented to the university assembly by Mrs. Claire McNicoll, Vice-Rector of undergraduate studies and continuing education, on September 13. "This average increase of 16 % reverses the trend observed over the last six years", mentioned the Vice-Rector. She attributes this reversal in part by the creation of new programs.

"With this increase, we are heading toward achieving our revival plan objective of an increase of 2,100 recognized full-time students over a three year period" added Mrs. McNicoll. At least half of the new registrants are in the Arts and Sciences Faculty. Mrs. Mireille Mathieu, Dean of the faculty, states that newly created programs better suited to people's needs accounted for 60% of the new applicants.

With its two affiliated schools, École Polytechnique and École des HEC, Université de Montréal is one of the largest Canadian research universities. It offers study programs at the three levels of higher education in almost every field of knowledge. It has 1,700 professors on staff and more than 44,500 registered students, of whom 10,265 are registered in graduate and post graduate programs. Université de Montréal ranks second among Canadian universities with regards to the number of students registered in graduate and post graduate programs. The Université also ranks 2nd or 3rd among Canadian research universities in terms of grants and research contracts.
