284 New Doctors


Montréal, May 31, 2002 - The Université de Montréal and its affiliated schools awarded 284 doctorate degrees at its Convocation ceremony today. In total, the UdeM awarded 8,400 bachelor, master and doctorate degrees this year.

The University also awarded four honoris causa doctorates to highlight the exceptional contribution of personalities renowned in their field of expertise. The four individuals honoured this year by the Université de Montréal were: Robert Brown, president and chief executive officer of Bombardier Inc.; André Caillé, president and chief executive officer of Hydro-Québec; Bernard Lassus, landscape architect and former professor at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in France; and linguist Bernard Quemada, director of the Conseil supérieur de la langue française in France.

Université de Montréal is a leader among major research universities. With its two affiliated schools, the École Polytechnique and the École des HEC, its campus is the largest in Québec. It offers undergraduate, masters and doctoral level programs in almost all areas of knowledge and has more than 50,000 students. It ranks second among universities in Canada in terms of research funding and research grants per professor. Université de Montréal is committed to developing new knowledge and transmitting existing expertise.
