Université de Montréal ranked first in Canada in terms of research intensity
"A result that points to the dynamism and quality of our researchers." Robert Lacroix, Rector of Université de Montréal.

Montréal, October 31, 2002 - Université de Montréal ranks among the top universities in Canada for research funding per professor, and second only to University of Toronto in terms of total research income. The rankings were established by Re$earch Infosource (Canada's source of corporate R&D intelligence) based on reliable, objective data, including figures from its own database and from Statistics Canada. Every year the organization publishes a list of the top fifty research universities in Canada.

These rankings are good news to the Rector of Université de Montréal, who observed: "The volume of funding we attract for research testifies to the dynamism of our research personnel, the quality of the work they do and their skill in designing and presenting promising projects. This result also confirms our university's leadership and its role in developing a knowledge-based society."

During the 2001 fiscal year, Université de Montréal invested close to 350 million dollars in research coming from some 2,000 government agencies, and non-profit or private organizations. Every year, some 7,000 research projects in practically all disciplines are submitted to these funding bodies.

The Université de Montréal campus is the largest in Québec. Together with its two affiliated schools, the École Polytechnique and the École des HEC, it provides undergraduate and graduate instruction in almost all areas of knowledge for more than 50,000 students, and awards more than 2,500 masters and doctoral degrees every year.

Complete information on these rankings is available on the Re$earch Infosource website at www.researchinfosource.com
