Université de Montréal places second in Canada on research rankings list

November 4th, 2004 – The exceptional researchers at Université de Montreal have been recognized nationally for their work after the university attained first place in Quebec and second in all of Canada on the Top 50 Research Universities List 2004, a ranking of Canadian university research intensity and income.

Université de Montréal earned $394.4 million in sponsored research income for the 2003 fiscal year, the most money awarded to a Quebec university and second only to the University of Toronto in the rest of the country, according to Research Infosource, which today released its figures. The organization compiles an annual rankings list, based on data from a variety of sources including Statistics Canada, Conférence des recteurs et des principaux des universités du Québec (CREPUQ) and the Institute for Scientific Information.

On an individual faculty level, UdeM scored far above the average of $124,300 in terms of research intensity. Its 1,810 full-time faculty attracted, on average $217,900 in sponsored research income, second in Canada to McGill University. It was one of only five universities to post intensity levels in excess of $200,000 per faculty

“This ranking certainly recognizes the contribution of our innovative researchers and confirms our place in both Quebec and Canada in terms of research.” said Alain Caillé, vice-rector for Research at the Université de Montréal.
